Sleep Laboratory

Maryland General Hospital's Sleep Laboratory helps patients who have problems sleeping.

The major sleep disorder our physicians treat is called obstructive sleep apnea. Its symptoms include excessive daytime sleepiness, loud and irregular snoring, morning headaches, irritability, moodiness, poor concentration, obesity, hypertension, frequent night urination, loss of energy and depression.

Obstructive sleep apnea causes thousands of deaths each year and can cause or contribute to high blood pressure, stroke, fluid retention, abnormal heartbeats and insomnia, which is the inability to fall asleep or maintain sleep. The test for obstructive sleep apnea is performed in our sleep lab, where you spend the night in one of our private rooms while a technician monitors data related to your sleeping patterns. We have Sleep Medicine certified doctors on staff who will interpret your test and are available for consultation.

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale measures your general level of sleepiness which may be a sign of you not obtaining adequate sleep at night. Your score can help you start a conversation with your doctor about excessive sleepiness and underlying causes. To assist in calculating your sleepiness score, use the Epworth Sleepiness Scale form.
