Dr. Gopal and Dr. Lilly

Michael P. Lilly, MD
Director, The Maryland Vascular Center at Maryland General Hospital
Chief of Surgery, Maryland General Hospital
Associate Professor of Surgery, University of Maryland

Dr. Lilly is Board-certified in general and vascular surgery. He completed his vascular surgery training at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois. He has been a faculty member of the University of Maryland since 1989 and developed the basic science research program in the Division of Vascular Surgery. He has served as Director of the Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory at UMMC and Chief of Vascular Surgery at the Baltimore VA.

Kapil Gopal, MD, MBA

Assistant Professor of Surgery, University of Maryland

Dr. Gopal graduated from Temple University School of Medicine in 2000. He completed his internship at the Pennsylvania Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Health System and then returned to Temple University Hospital for surgical training. Dr. Gopal went on to perform translational gene therapy research at the University of Pennsylvania under a National Institutes of Health T32 grant. After completing his General Surgery training at Lenox Hill Hospital in 2007, Dr. Gopal completed his vascular surgery training at Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York.


Rajabrata Sarkar, M.D., Ph.D.
Professor of Surgery, Division Head and Chief of Vascular Surgery
Dr. Sarkar is an expert in treating blood vessel disorders and a nationally known researcher in blood vessel growth and development. Dr. Sarkar comes from the University of California, San Francisco, where he was an associate professor of surgery and a vascular surgeon since 1999. He received his medical degree and a Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed his surgical training at UCLA and was trained in vascular surgery at the University of Michigan.

William R. Flinn, MD
Professor of Surgery, University of Maryland
Dr. Flinn completed his Vascular Surgery training at Northwestern University. He served as Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of Maryland from 1993 to 2008. His special interests include suprarenal aneurysms, vein bypass grafts, complex re-operative aortic, carotid and peripheral bypass procedures and noninvasive surveillance programs for deep vein thrombosis.

Marshall E. Benjamin, MD
Director, The Maryland Vascular Center at Baltimore Washington Medical Center
Chief of Surgery, Baltimore Washington Medical Center

Dr. Benjamin completed his Vascular Surgery training at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University. Dr. Benjamin has expanded the program experience with renal artery revascularization and endovascular grafting for aortic aneurysms at our institution. Dr. Benjamin is an RVT and serves as Medical Director of the Vascular Laboratory at the University of Maryland Hospital.

Brajesh K. Lal, MD
Assistant Professor of Surgery, University of Maryland
Director of Endovascular Surgery

Prior to coming to the University of Maryland, Dr. Lal was on faculty at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ-NJMS). After completing medical school at All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi, India, Dr. Lal spent two years in the Fogarty Research Fellowship program at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. After his fellowship at NIH, he completed his surgical residency and vascular surgical fellowship at the UMDNJ-NJMS. In addition, he serves on the Executive Committee of the American Venous Forum and as Chairman of the American Venous Registry.

Lael Henry, RVT, RDMS
Technical Director, Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory at Maryland General Hospital
Mrs. Henry has an impressive 35 years of healthcare experience. She started as a medical assistant and advanced her role as an Office Manager for an Internal Medicine Practice. Mrs. Henry's career expands further when she became the Clinical Instructor for the Medix School in Towson, Maryland. Mrs. Henry also trained and subsequently became employed at the University of Maryland Medical System as a Vascular Technologist in 1989. Over the past 21 years, she has worked in both hospital and private office settings as a Staff Technologist and Technical Director.
